Meet Dr. Patel And The Orangeville Vision Development Centre Team

Dr. Brij Patel OD, HBMSc

Dr. Brij Patel OD, HBMSc

Dr. Patel received his first pair of glasses when he was 9 years old, and that is when he realized how clear the world is. Since then, he has developed a keen interest in vision care and has made it his mission to help patients see their absolute best.

Dr. Patel completed his Bachelor of Science degree with distinction at the University of Western Ontario and further went to the University of Waterloo to complete his Doctor of Optometry degree with distinction.

During his first year of optometry school, Dr. Patel got introduced to vision therapy when he was working as an optometric student at a vision development center. He learned about and saw how vision therapy transformed patients' lives. Dr. Patel started doing vision therapy exercises on himself and noticed a significant improvement in his visual skills, attention, and visual memory.

During his clinical externships and training, Dr. Patel worked with patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries (concussions), learning difficulties, strabismus, and amblyopia. He participated in and organized several sport vision seminars and vision screenings for athletes. He played a key role in organizing the special olympics vision screenings. He has been mentored by the leading experts in Canadian vision rehabilitation.

Dr Patel has expanded and continues enhancing his clinical knowledge and expertise by taking continuing education courses, particularly in vision therapy, traumatic brain injury management, syntonics and sports vision. He has attended several conferences and courses offered by the Canadian Optometrists in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation (COVT&R),Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF), International Sports Vision Association (ISVA) and College of Vision Development.  Dr. Patel is currently enrolled into the Powerful Vision Therapy Seminar Series by Dr. Sanet in San Diego California

Along with enhancing his clinical expertise, Dr. Patel has held various leadership and volunteer roles . He was the President of the Canadian Association of Optometry Students, Vice President of the Sports vision club, and the very first Student Councillor of the Canadian Association of Optometrists. He is currently on the Science and Research committee with Vision Therapy Canada.  Dr. Patel has participated in two eye care mission trips in Ecuador and Jamaica, where he provided eye care services to over 10,000 patients.

Dr Patel owns and operates three full-scope private practices located in Orangeville, Brampton and Etobicoke

Dr. Patel is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, Ontario Association of Optometrists, Canadian Optometrists in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation (COVT&R), International Sports Vision Association (ISVA), and Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF).

Cheryl Fischer

Optometric Assistant

Cheryl is our newest member here at OVDC joining us in September 2022 as our new Optometric Assistant, she has 2 plus years in the Optometric field and is excited to further her career here with us. Cheryl has over 10 plus years experience in retail as well as in administrative assistance and is the face of primary care here at OVDC.

In her free time Cheryl is very active in the community helping out with small business markets, volunteering at youth rehab centers and staying up to date with local small businesses in the area. She also enjoys painting and reading, and spending time with her family and friends.
Leanne De Palma

Leanne De Palma

PVTAP, Accredited Vision Therapist

In 2006, Leanne began her career in the field of optometry. Graduating from Centennial College as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Leanne worked alongside Ontario’s best ophthalmologists, assisting with Lasik and cataract surgeries. With the experience she acquired, Leanne was able to make an easy transition into the world of Vision Therapy.

Leanne has successfully completed the clinical curriculum of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF) and is a member of the College of Syntonic Optometry.
She completed the Practical Vision Therapy Accreditation Program (PVTAP) in the summer of 2018 and is a proud member of Vision Therapy Canada.
Leanne dedicates her free time to instructing PVTAP workshops and mentoring up & coming Canadian vision therapists.
In April 2020, Leanne was selected as the newest member of the Vision Therapist Committee and was nominated for the ‘Vision Therapist of the Year’ award. Leanne continues to expand her knowledge of vision development by attending continuing education courses yearly.

Leanne has almost 10 years of experience as a vision therapist in Canada and Australia. In that time she has helped rehabilitate countless patients with visual difficulties following a concussion/acquired brain injury and takes great pride in working with kids who are struggling in the classroom due to learning-related vision problems and patients with strabismus & amblyopia.

Leanne’s involvement with Vision Therapy Canada has allowed her to meet other amazing therapists and optometrists who share her affliction for vision therapy and every opportunity has furthered her growth. Through years of experience in the areas of visual health, visual development, and rehabilitation, Leanne has helped countless patients resolve their visual problems and looks forward to working with many more to come.

Krishna Patel

Krishna Patel

PVTAP, Accredited Vision Therapist, H BSc

Pursuing the field of science, Krishna completed her Bachelor of Sciences with Honours from McMaster University in 2014. Following that, she completed a certification course to become a certified Occupational & Physiotherapist Assistant.

Through her academic terms, internships, and work experiences, Krishna brings valuable experiences from hospital, rehabilitation, and long term care facilities to the OVDC team. She has worked and aided patients of all ages, with various types of conditions and disabilities, recover from their conditions. She has experience working at Sunnybrook Health Centre for over 2 years.

Krishna has successfully made her transition into becoming a vision therapist. The fundamentals of her education, interpersonal skills, and vast experience have allowed her to excel as a vision therapist . Krishna, is actively enhancing her knowledge and skills by attending courses or conferences. She has successfully completed the Practical Vision Therapy Accreditation Program (PVTAP) in the summer of 2021 and is a proud member of Vision Therapy Canada.

Krishna currently resides with her husband in Brampton. Outside of her work life, she puts her creativity skills to use and enjoys doing a lot of arts and crafts in her free time. Along with that, she enjoys reading books, spending time with her friends and family, and planning for her travels around the world.

Krishna takes great pride in working with each of her patients and continually strives to achieve improvements and positive results through vision therapy.

Alessia Colalillo

Alessia Colalillo

PVTAP, Accredited Vision Therapist, BHS

Alessia graduated with honours from Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in 2021 where she received her diploma in Behavioural Sciences.

She is continuing her studies at Seneca College and is in her final year of obtaining her Honours Bachelor Degree in Behavioural Psychology.

Throughout her post-secondary education she completed a virtual placement at Connect The Dots Child Development Services where she worked with populations with developmental disabilities, ASD, ADHD, and behavioral challenges.

She has successfully completed the Practical Vision Therapy Program (PVTAP) and is a proud member of Vision Therapy Canada.

Carley Johnson

Mindset Coach

Carley is an alternative health practitioner. She is an energy healer and a mindset coach and supports others in releasing trauma and limiting beliefs to find healing on all levels. She is a mindfulness and meditation teacher, a yoga teacher, and certified in reiki and couple and family therapy. She believes that transformation can only occur when you shift your internal beliefs and, subsequently your energy. Her goal is to empower others to find meaning and purpose and live in a way that feels authentic and joyful.

Noor graduated with honours from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2023, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. During her undergraduate career, Noor joined the Let’s Grow Learning and Living Hub team in Downtown Toronto to aid young adults with physical and developmental disabilities by providing one-on-one care. She has a passion for making positive change and helping others. Noor looks forward to assisting patients with eye exams, product selection, and finding the perfect pair of glasses. She is dedicated to expanding her knowledge in the field of optometry and looks forward to working with you!

Optometric Assistant

Amandeep’s diverse background and experience makes her a valuable part of our team. She is trained as a Nurse, Early Child Educator, and Personal Support Worker. She has worked in the optical industry since January 2019 and is really enjoying it.

She specializes in frame styling, contact lens training, and fitting glasses. She strives to do her best on a daily basis and ensure that all patient needs are met.

In her spare time, she loves to spend time with her family and going outdoors.
